OUR STORY
Dutch Head Rum: an international story with local roots
Dutch Head is born on the slopes of the Giuseppe Brancatelli vineyard in Riotorto, Italy. With a glance over the vines, the three Dutch friends came up with the idea of distilling rum themselves. To combine their Dutch roots with that international, adventurous gene that also flows through their veins. After all, it is not for nothing that the Dutch are sailing the world’s seas for centuries.
Dutch Head Rum in the prizes
In the Netherlands, the men bought a still, but the plans really became concrete with a holiday in Valencia, Spain, in 2020. After returning home, they really went wild. And they like to do things a little differently. That is why traditional Dutch ingredients have been added to this originally South American drink. That the rum is distilled with contemporary, 21st century techniques. And it really contains a lot less sugar than other premium rum. That gives Dutch Head its own distinct taste. A taste with character. And it was rewarded! The first blend – The Basterd Edition – immediately won a 2-star Superior Taste Award and 92 points at the International Wine & Spirits Competition.
Why Dutch Head?
The name refers to the Dutch origin of the brand and to the distillation process. The distillate that is created during this process is successively called foreshot, heads, hearts and tails. The foreshot is lethal and forget about the tails, it tastes like a shoe sole. Now you really don’t want to have too many heads in your rum, but if you are stubborn and add a little… Then rum gets just that complexity that makes it special! So Dutch Head!
Meet the makers
Dutch Head, that is the story of rum and the friendship between Koen, Alex and Dennis.
Our own distillery
Dutch Head has its own business location in the Burgundian city of Breda. The blends are bottled at Herman Jansen in Schiedam near the international Port of Rotterdam, the centre of international shipping. The stills are ready and the men are eager to distill their first real rum. But… they still have to wait for the permit. Once it’s there, they’ll go full throttle!
