The Bastard

We take pride in our first-born stepchild

The Bastard edition is a blend of five exclusive rums of which the oldest one has a age of eight years in American oak casks. The purest Dutch water and a little dash of sugar. It defines this rum and gives it a class of it’s own. It received two stars in the Superior Taste Award 2021 and 92 points in the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2021. In 2024 again a silver medal at the London Spirits Competion

The name of our rum: “the Bastard”, reflects the unconventional path we’ve taken, sourcing from external distilleries. Yet, the result fills us with pride, similar to raising our own child.

The Bastard Edition: the result of more than 125 years of experience

Together with renowned sugar specialist Royal Cosun, we developed the unique blend of The Basterd Edition. In doing so, we were able to draw on the company’s more than a hundred twenty five years of knowledge and experience in the sugar industry. And the result is definitely there: a top quality rum, made with only 9.4 grams of sugar per bottle, a lot less when you look at exisiting premium rum brands in the market.

This rum has already won multiple awards since it’s birth. A tasting note from the International Wine & Spirit Competition and we quote:

Smooth and creamy with rich chocolate and sweet tobacco notes. Fragrant spice and buttery croissant laced with golden syrup. Decently decadent.

The ingredients

Crafted with precision, the Bastard is a blend of five distinct rums sourced from four renowned distilleries:

  • 100% Dutch water and a dash of our caster sugar
  • 5 year aged Dominican Republic rum
  • 3 year aged Guatemala Rum
  • 8 year aged Venezuela Rum
  • 2-3 year aged Panama Rum
  • 8 year aged Panama Rum

The fermentation process varies, with molasses serving as the base for four of the rums, while cane juice is used for the Dominican Republic rum.

Matured to perfection, the blend undergoes aging in American Oak barrels, imparting depth and complexity to its character.

How it is made

Crafted with meticulous care, our process begins by blending these five rums to achieve the perfect balance of flavor and aroma. Maintaining their original cask strength, the rums are blended together at an impressive 62% ABV (Alcohol By Volume). Subsequently, we carefully dilute the blend to 40% ABV, allowing the full spectrum of flavors and scents to flourish in this exquisite mixture. To complement the blend, we add a subtle touch of caster sugar (known as basterd sugar in Dutch), with just 2.4 cubes per bottle, enhancing its richness and depth.

As we’ve observed with many other brands, exceeding 9.4 grams of sugar per bottle can flatten both the taste and nose of the rum. This phenomenon becomes apparent, particularly when the rum is mixed with cola, resulting in excessive foaming and splashing in the glass.

This entire process takes place in our distillery and bottlery, located below sea level in our homeland, the Netherlands, where we proudly embrace our identity as the Dutch.

Typically Dutch

Initially, our goal was to craft our own rum but circumstances intervened! Leaving us unable to wait the three years or more required for traditional aging. Despite already having acquired our distillation unit, we had to adapt our approach. Thus, the name of our rum, the Bastard, reflects the unconventional path we’ve taken, sourcing from external distilleries. Yet, the result fills us with pride, similar to raising our own child.

Our strategic location in The Netherlands, often referred to as Holland, gives us a unique advantage in rum production. Known as the Dutch, our skilled artisans utilize some of the purest water sources globally, resulting in an unparalleled “premium rum” that stands apart from the rest.

Infusing a touch of our Dutch mentality into every drop ensures a distinctive flavor that reflects our heritage.
